Dot Week: Dot Day Across the Curriculum

Instead of just having one day for Dot Day,

we extended it to Dot Week!

Dot Week Science: Cohesion of Water "Dots"

Using a scientific tool called a pipette,
we experimented with dots of water.

Combining "dots" on waxed paper

How many "dots" can you put on a penny?

Writing up a lab report

Dot Week Literature: Peter H. Reynolds books

Reading The Dot by Peter H. Reynold

We also read Ish, Just Say Something, Sky Color
and The North StarSeabury School and the Navigators' classroom have fantastic, extensive libraries, perfect for kids who love to learn!

Dot Week STEM: Engineering a boat for the rabbit who needs to be saved in The North Star.

Ask yourself, where it is you want to go...

Make a plan.

Get the supplies. And get started.

Going through the engineering process

Will it float?

YES, MINE FLOATS!

Dot Week Art: In art class we made a community project.

Each person's dot was different.
Watch for the project to be displayed at school.

Dot Week Math: Dot to dots using skip counting
and discovering famous inventors'
inventions, innovations,
and discoveries.

Rosalind Franklin: counting by 2's
Rosalind Franklin was an English chemist whose work was central to the understanding of the molecular structures of DNA, RNA, viruses, coal, and graphite.

And even Dot Week Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

The rabbit in The North Star found itself in a predicament. Because it was always in a hurry, and didn't STOP (stop, take a breath, observe, and proceed), it ended up stranded on a twig in the middle of a river. Fortunately, most of us were able to help it to shore in our STEM activity. The moral of the story? STOP and think about what you are doing!

At Seabury School we have the freedom to spend more time and go deep and wide on something as simple as Dot Day. In the process, we had a lot of fun and learned a whole lot!

It Starts with a Dot ...

The Navigators celebrated International Dot Day
with millions of children around the world.

Dot Day is based on the book by Peter H. Reynolds that is simply titled The Dot.

You can read it here

After reading the book, we came up with our own creations,
starting with a dot.

Notice the creativity, the diversity, the knowledge base,
and the amazingness of these pictures drawn by the gifted and talented students who are so fortunate to attend a school designed for them.

The abdomen of a bumblebee

The center of a flower

The center of our solar system

This one led to a look at pointillism

... and a quick video called

The center point of the y and x axes
of a coordinate plane
"to: everyone" ... his gift to the world? :)

A half sun/half moon face of a cat
and its sun tail

A flying unicorn bunny

An eye of a rainbow self portrait framed in gold
(She's going to LOVE doing illuminated drawings
later on in our study of the Middle Ages!)

Dots are everywhere...
the center of the flower,
the head of the butterfly,
the spots on the butterfly
and the sun!

Giftedness is ..

... a greater awareness, a greater sensitivity, and a greater ability to understand and transform perceptions into intellectual and emotional experiences."

Dot Day was integrated across the curriculum!

Play with a Purpose: So Many Choices

The first-grade Navigators are settling into a nice schedule. Built into that schedule is "building" time, a time when they can choose what they'd like to "build".

Choice, play, building, learning...
they all fit together.

Building a castle scene

Building large numbers

Building a marble maze

Building a wardrobe

Building a song

Building a tower

Building a treasure chest

Building a picture

Building a math problem

When asked what the best part of their day was,
most of them often say EVERYTHING!

Gotta love Seabury School!

First Day of First Grade 2021-2022!

The first graders at Seabury School
are little people
with big personalities,
big ideas, and
big potentials.

They are bright.

They are curious.

They are engaged.

They are creative.

They are passionate.

They are imaginative.

They are giddy about learning.

They are sensitive.

They are each unique.

These gifted students have these traits and so many more.

It's a good thing we have small classes
for these larger-than-life students!

First Grade-isms

A first grader recites 200+ digits of pi!
