Next in our study of simple machines is the screw.
We discover that a screw is basically a "twisty inclined plane".
We make a model of a screw out of a pencil, a paper triangle,
and a chenille wire.
A little bit of tape helps.
Can you see the twisted chenille wire?
Does it look like a screw?
All the supplies and lab reports have been sent home and the Navigators at home are able to do it at the same time.
The next day we get out nails and hammers, screws and screwdrivers, and go to work.
We discover that it's not as easy to put a screw in a piece of wood.
We discover that a hammer works like a lever, too, and that the lever makes the job of taking out the nail much easier.
