The first and second grade Navigators have been immersed in the study of Egypt. We learned so many things, not by being lectured at, but by asking questions and discovering answers along the way.
One student literally kept a list of mysteries he wanted to solve. Here is his list. Instead of giving him the answers right away, we discovered the answers through inquiry-based learning and by thinking like archaeologists and Egyptologists. We had lots of exciting light-bulb moments.
"I know, I know! That's what that shape is. A cartouche!!"
As a culminating activity to celebrate all we learned about Egypt, we had an Egypt Day. For several days, our classroom became a MakerSpace as we made costumes and props for our final day.
We spent the day dressed as Pharaohs,
a cat goddess, a duck goddess, and a farmer with his cow.
Look what you can do with an old pillowcase
and a lot of attention to detail.
Performing Arts class outdoors.
Even our class mascot, Spangler (little black and white dog),
came dressed as a pharaoh.
Jewels and sparkles abounded.
By the way, she's 8 now. :)
Cats are her favorite thing.
She recently returned back to school from distance learning
and made this beautiful cat mask at home.
In her distant learning box were some jewels
and a paper plate. Do you see the paper plate?
She added all the rest!
Having show and tell with our friends at home.
Since lots of others wanted to be a pharaoh,
he decided to be a farmer.
Best MakerSpace cow I've ever beheld.
A bedazzling duck goddess
Tada! Pharaoh!
Mrs. Towne's mask came in handy. She stapled her paper cup
beard onto it and became Queen Hatshepsut,
the female pharaoh who dressed
as a man to show her authority.
Since we must stay as a cohort, we had a parade
that went all around the outside of the school.
The school admin and our schoolmates
looked out their windows or came outside to see us.
What a creative, innovative, fun group
of first and second graders.
Just look at the variety.
We now know a lot about Egypt.
Just ask one of us!
We ended the day with movies and popcorn.
We watched our favorite video
called "The Egyptian Pyramids".
Pop some popcorn and enjoy it here.
