Real Life Math Applications: So Much to Measure!

 How big is a foot?

As we measured with our own feet, we discovered that we need a standardized unit of measurement.

Using standardized feet, we then measured the length of a variety of dinosaurs and were quite surprised. It took a lot of collaboration.

Temperature is also something to be measured. We looked for the coldest and hottest places at school and, in the process, learned about scale. We had a wonderful day of freezing temperatures that day.

We then "played" with a variety of scales to measure  and compare weight.

We also measured capacity. Again, it was another experience in working together.  Notice our "math thinking" in our lab reports.

We learned the story of King Gallon - a perfect tie-in to our recent study of the Middle Ages and factors of multiplication! One gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups = 128 ounces.

We finished our study of measurement with a game of   "Race to a Gallon" and "Race to Zero", similar to the place value games we played at the beginning of the year.

At Seabury, we start with the concept and go all out to get a solid understanding. Who knew that math and measurement could be so fun!?
