A Real Life Treasure Hunt at Jerry's Rock and Gem

One of my favorite field trips in our two year science rotation is to go to Jerry's Rock and Gem, a shop in the Kent valley that is owned and operated by Dr. Joan, a paleontologist and geologist with a passion for all things that first and seconds graders love. She also has a passion for sharing her passion with future scientists, the first and second graders at Seabury School!

We're ready to learn from the expert!

Dr. Joan has a PhD in both paleontology and geology.

She has traveled the world doing dinosaur digs.

Oohing and aaahing over the huge amethyst geodes.

Experiencing the lightness of a pumice rock.

This dinosaur bone is almost as tall as me!

With $5 in our pockets, it's time to go shopping!

So much to choose from.

These girls choose rock bracelets.

How much are these?

She finds her birthstone.

So many treasures to choose from.
She'll have to come back again!

Posing in front of Jerry, a prehistoric cave bear.

So much to see including this cast of a triceratops skull.

A passion launched: this past student dressed up as wulfenite for Halloween the year after our trip to Jerry's Rock and Gem.

We all went home that day with pockets full of treasure to add to our collections of cool rocks, fond memories, and meaningful learning.

EDUCATION AT SEABURY SCHOOL WORKS!
