Heart Matters

"Breathe in/Breathe out" by Ms. Feehan

As part of our study of the human body, we learned about the correlation between the circulatory and the respiratory systems by re-enacting the gas exchange that happens in our capillaries.

Breathe in oxygen, breathe out carbon dioxide.

As you can tell, we've learned a lot about our bodies.

Here are some of our heart and lung activities:

~~~~~
The question process:
We each added our questions to our big heart.
What is blood?
How does your heart pump out blood?
Why is the heart called a heart?
Does blood really have oxygen?
Is blood really read?
How fast does your heart beat?
How much blood do you have?
Why does the cornea not have a blood supply?
Is all blood the same?
Why do you need blood?
Why does blood cells rush to your head when you are upside down?
How does blood flow through the body?
What is the best way to protect your heart?
Why do our bodies need blood?
What are blood cells?
What elements make the human body?
How do you get blood?
Which side of the heart bumps blood?
Do cats have blood flows?
How fast does your heart beat?
Why are white blood cells in blood?
Why are there four chambers, not two?
~~~~~

We made a model of  blood:

~~~~~
We had a STEM activity called Make Your Own Stethoscope using a variety of supplies:
~~~~~

We ran three laps around the playground and used real stethoscopes to hear our hearts beat.

~~~~~
We did some mindfulness activities and realized that our hearts began to beat a lot slower.
~~~~~

We re-enacted oxygen being delivered to each of our trillions of cells.
(See video at top.)

We had fun having Navie the Navigator join our class for several weeks.
