Models and Games and Experiments, Oh My!

The best way to learn is to play.
Look how much fun we're having
as we learn about the systems of the body!

The nervous system:

The central nervous system: the brain and the spinal cord

The inside of the brain

Our brain hats

Model Magic is magic!

The parts of the brain are like a puzzle.

Taking it to the next level
Notice her neuron necklace.

Another Model Magic model
This one includes the spinal cord.

Making neurons with the axon and dendrites

We did experiments with each of the five senses.

Our tongues have nerve endings that send messages to the brain.

Sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and umami

Mmmm, that was tasty!

Testing the side of the tongue

Testing the tip of the tongue

The skeletal and muscle systems:

We have lots of books and models in our room.

An up close look

Working together to label a diagram

We added the main bones to our paper bag model.

The vertebrae protecting the spinal cord

The ribs protecting the organs

Tape resist art

"Girl holding a bunny."

Notice the joint and tooth models
along with the beautiful works of art.

Digestive system:

Advice from the second graders and digestion games!
Video by Ms. Feehan, our second grade teacher

Making beautiful food

"Chewing" it well
Notice the esophagus and the stomach.

More yummy food

More "chewing"

A scientific experiment: Stomach Model Lab

Mashing up a banana, some crackers, and 25 mL of water.

Just add food coloring. :)

Measuring the water using a real graduated cylinder

Measuring 25 feet of adding machine tape
to make our small and large intestines
Oh, and meet Navie, the Navigator on the floor!

It was tricky stuffing our guts with all that paper.
